Welcome to a wet and soggy week here in not so sunny Florida. We are glad you have joined us again for Faith Matters. Some parts of the country are burning from fires and yet other parts are drowning in water. Nevertheless I put my faith in God and the fact that He knows what He is doing. Today I am looking to discuss distractions in life, I feel like so many of us want to be closer to God, but there always seems to be something that pops up and distracts us from our goal of spending more time with God.
First, let us open up with prayer. Lord we come before you today with a desire, a longing, an anguish to know You more. Father please help us to see with spiritual eyes, help us to see the stumbling blocks before we fall for them, help us to examine our lives and the errors that stand before us. Father, we know that we are not perfect, but yet we know that You gave us Jesus to cover our sins with grace. Lord please give me the proper words to speak into the souls of those who hear, let it not just be condemning, but instead let the words spoken lift up the spirit and bring about a peace that exceeds our own understanding. In Your name I pray, amen.
The definition of the word distraction is:
1) a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something else
2) extreme agitation of the mind or emotions.
Wow, so can you think of “a thing” that prevents you from giving God your full attention? I am sure that each one of us can come up with several examples of something that keeps popping up and preventing us from giving our time to God.
Lets just name a few:
1) Social Media
3) Girlfriend / Boyfriend
4) Favorite Television Show
6) Maybe for some it could be Food
There are plenty of things that we allow come between us and God. Why is it that we can’t control our urges, we think in our brain, we tell ourselves that we don’t need it, yet our flesh pushes us to do it anyways.
Matthew 26:41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
We give in because the flesh is weak. My dad constantly told me growing up that the best way to avoid falling into sin is to not put yourself in the situation. Let me say that one more time. The best way to avoid falling into sin is to not put yourself in the situation. If you have the slightest doubt that something could go wrong then just say no from the beginning and then you don’t have to be tempted. There is nothing wrong with saying no. The peer pressure may come, but you have to rise above it all.
Galatians 5:17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
Isn’t that amazing that God designed us to have this internal conflict? God created us to discern the difference between what is right and wrong. So many times I hear people try to say there is no God, but if that is the case then where do your morals come from? If there is no God then why isn’t everyone killing each other, all of the things that we consider evil we be fair game right? You see, all things good come from God and it is the spirit that is within us that checks the flesh and reminds us that our desires are not what God would want.
I found this golden nugget of a verse and it stood out to me so I wanted to share it with you today.
Romans 6:16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
Look at your life, who chooses for you who you will obey? It isn’t me, it isn’t your friend next to you, it isn’t your parents because as teenagers we know we all rebelled against them; You are the only person who can choose for yourself who you will obey. If you obey the sin that has creeped into your life then you have become a slave to it. You willingly put your arms out and let the shackles be placed upon your arms each and every day.
Do you know why it is important to deny your flesh? The Bible speaks directly to it.
Romans 8:8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Who here doesn’t want to be pleasing to God? I am sure we all want to make God happy just like we want to make our parents proud of us.
So now we should talk about “The Great Escape”. Did you know that God leaves you a back door getaway option? Have you ever looked for it when you find yourself stuck in a pickle and you can’t remember how you got there in the first place?
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
Now if God will only give you what you can endure, why is it you keep falling for the same mistake? Do you want to know why? The answer is more simple than you can imagine. When we enter into a situation that could compromise us as a Christian, one of the things we do is try to hide it and make sure no one is watching. We will even go through the steps mentally of trying to leave God at the door while you slowly close the door behind you. God didn’t say okay you got this I will just wait outside, nope, YOU left Him out there on purpose because the flesh wanted to have fun. Sin looks so beautiful, sin looks like a bunch of fun, sin looks like a waterpark on a sunny hot day, but then once you decide to partake it grips you and you can’t get away on your own power. Now, all of sudden you turn around looking for God to help you out of your situation, yet you left Him at the door.
Don’t close the door on God!
Don’t let your brain try to fool you into thinking it will be okay, nobody is going to know, nobody is watching…God is watching!
Now that second definition if you were not distracted was: extreme agitation of the mind or emotions. Now that is very interesting, wouldn’t you say that satan attempts to attack your mind and emotions? When you dream at night do you have nightmares? When you are at work do you have fears of not being adequate? When you are out with a group of friends do you have fears of not fitting in? All of these things are not of God but of the enemy. God works to build you up and the enemy works to tear you down.
The enemy will point to your weaknesses and God will point out how strong you are with Him.
The enemy will call you a coward, but God will call you a mighty soldier.
The enemy will call you dumb, but God will open your mind and teach you.
The enemy will point out your imperfections, but God will look at you and remind you that you were made in His image.
The enemy will look to divide you, but God will look to multiple what He has given you.
The enemy will try to try to push you down, but God is there to lift you up.
The enemy will try to trick you, but God will shower you with truth upon truth.
The enemy will try to hide in the dark, but God will shine bright in the light.
The enemy will attack you at your weakest moment, but God will come to defend you.
The enemy will call out your past sins but God will remind you that Jesus Christ died on a cross for your sins.
The enemy told me that I would never be a preacher and yet I stand before you proclaiming the word of God.
The enemy is a liar so stop listening to the lies and start hearing the word of God. Cast out the lies, let the lies fall upon death ears.
God is mightier, God is stronger, God will not fail you, and God shall prevail!
We need a generation that is on fire for God,
We need a generation that is tired of listening to what they can’t do and starts fighting for what God has called them to do,
We need a generation that prays,
We need a generation that lays it all down before The Lord,
We need a generation that will not be moved,
We need a generation that will proclaim the name of Jesus!
Heavenly Father I thank you for allowing me yet again to proclaim the name of Jesus. Lord I pray that someone was touched by this message today. I pray that whatever distractions have come up in their lives Lord that they cast them out, remove the excuses, remove the pain, remove the sorrow, remove anything that stands in the way of us being able to come to Your throne room. Father please forgive us for not fighting this battle, forgive us for not conquering these hurdles, forgive us for laying down all of the excuses. Lord we call upon Your name, Jesus we need you, we need you to help us overcome the distractions of this world. Lord be with us each and every day as the enemy throws his fiery darts, protects father, let us rise above the negativity in this world be the light that You have called us to be. In Your name Jesus we pray, Amen.
