Can you believe it? Another week has gone by and welcome back to Faith Matters. I am so glad that you are here listening each and every week. Our goal here at Faith Matters is to share some testimony with you and also some scriptures to support what God is doing, can do, and will do in your life. Last week I talked about my personal testimony surrounding my baseball career and how dreams don’t always come true. If you missed it you can catch up on any of the past episodes by visiting our website:
But enough about last week, let’s look ahead to what God has coming down the line. Recently, I mentioned that we are in the process of buying a house and so this week I am going to use that as my testimony to really show how good God is. Before we go any deeper we need to open up in prayer.
Heavenly Father, today is your day. I thank you for the many blessings that you continue to bestow upon my family. It feels like every time I turn a corner that you have another blessing there just waiting for me. Lord, I pray for those that are listening, that my personal testimony doesn’t say look at me, but instead speaks volumes to Your glory. Lord for everything that I do, I seek to do it to be pleasing unto you. Please bless this message and let it touch the hearts of those who hear it, in Your name I pray. Amen.
What do you consider your home? Is it just where you sleep at night or does it have certain attributes? If you answered a home is where you sleep then I must ask you then how come it is always harder to sleep in a hotel than it is at home? Home is definitely more than a place that you sleep. The best part for me about being home is that I feel relaxed and at peace when I am at home. Some of you might think, wait what are you talking about? Don’t you have several kids? Yes, I do, but when you are at home the craziness of the world outside stops at the front door. You can control the pace of what is going on around you.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary gives us three simple examples of what a home is:
: the place (such as a house or apartment) where a person lives
: a family living together in one building, house, etc.
: a place where something normally or naturally lives or is located
But is that it, just a place where someone lives? Do you know that God has prepared a home for you?
John 14:1-2 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? “
God has prepared a place for us to dwell with Him. Have you ever stopped to think about what your home in Heaven would look like? Would there be doors? Would there be windows? Will the walls be made of clear glass so that you can always see the sun shining? So many thoughts, so many questions, and for me I am excited to see what God has prepared.
So for me and my family our home is where we live, where we raise our children, where we serve The Lord wholeheartedly. Last year my wife and I were looking to move our home into a bigger place. We had a 2 bedroom apartment and my teenager was getting tired of sharing a room with his little brother. We had many discussions about this and felt it was finally time to move into a 3 bedroom place. We looked around town for different places to rent, but the rent on a 3 bedroom was just as much as paying a mortgage on a house.
Now, have you ever gone out looking for a house before praying about it? I know I did and maybe you have also. My wife loves to pray so I am sure she prayed first, but we found this cute, perfect, condo that was 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths for about $55,000. We thought we hit the jackpot, even with the HOA fees, insurance, and taxes we would be paying hundreds less a month on rent. My hopes were high, the rent for this place would be about half of what I am paying now.
For those of you that live in California, Hawaii, or New England this type of place would cost you over $400,000 but in Florida the cost of houses are cheaper, for now. My wife and I started praying about this condo, this is what we prayed, “Lord if this is Your will then please bless us with this home, but if it is not, please close the door.”
Can you guess what came next? Probably not because God works in mysterious ways, but my wife was laid off from her job. Not just in a normal fashion, but on the exact same day that we were supposed to find out if the mortgage was approved. We also got a phone call from the mortgage company on the loan application and it was denied. Can you believe this; we had two doors closed in our face on the same exact day? Didn’t I mention that God works in mysterious ways? God already knew that my wife would be laid off from her job; He already knew that this wasn’t the place, and He answered our prayers by closing that door.
Habakkuk 2:3 For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.
We had a vision of what we wanted, but God didn’t just close the door and say no, He was really saying “not yet.”
For those of you that might be out there waiting for an answer to your prayer I want to read this next verse.
Psalm 27:14 Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!
The flesh tells us we have to have it now or else. God in His infinite wisdom holds onto the blessings until we are ready to receive them. Think about it this way, if God was to bless you and you were not ready, would you not squander it? Be patient – God knows the desires of your heart.
Some more time has passed and my father in law came down to visit us from New Jersey. He liked it here and started to look for a house here. In case you didn’t know it is cold in New England for the winter and he was ready to thaw out. We spent weeks upon weeks looking around town trying to find a house in the right location by a senior center and for the right price. We finally found a 4 bedroom 2 bath house that was close to the senior center and had everything we were looking for. This house even had a swing set in the backyard for the kids. Lord, is this the house that we have been searching for?
We all went together to see the house, we opened each closet, opened each door, turned on each of the light switches, and we all fell in love. We thought maybe this could finally be happening. My father in law mentioned that he wanted to move in with us and we could all live together. We all talked about the options that night and decided we would sleep on it. My wife and I prayed that prayer again, “Lord if this is your will then please open the doors for us, but if this is not please close them.”
The next morning we awoke to a man that was not very happy. He was supposed to be staying with us for about 6 weeks on vacation but in the morning hours he went to the Post Office to change his mail forwarding and even changed his plane flight to leave the next day. To our shock we couldn’t understand how a man who was so excited about this house last night could be such a complete opposite in the morning. He told us that he couldn’t sleep all night and that he had changed his mind. Little did he know that my wife and I both prayed that “if this was not God’s will that He should shut the door on this opportunity.”
After this last disappoint my wife and I both decided that it was time to stop teasing ourselves and stop looking at houses. When your heart is set on something, but God is still saying “not yet”, it is very difficult to not be discouraged. But we know that God blesses His people when the time is ripe.
I want to go back to a scene from the movie “Facing the Giants”. The preacher tells the man a parable about two farmers who prayed because they desperately needed rain, but only one of them went out into the fields to prepare them. Which one do you think trusted God to send the rain? He responds well the one who prepared the fields. Which one are you?
God will send the rain when He is ready; YOU need to prepare your fields to receive it.
We may be praying for God to bless us, but have we prepared our fields to receive those blessings. I want to challenge you, if you have been praying and praying for God to answer your prayer, stop and look at your life; have you done everything within your control to prepare yourself to receive God’s answer to your prayer?
A couple months ago we went to a boys and girls home. We met some great kids and it got my wife and I started to think about adoption. Even my oldest son mentioned that we should adopt one of the kids. This sparked the concern again about our home and would 3 bedrooms be big enough or should we get a 4 bedroom house. So because of the spark of a child we decided to set out again to see what our options were.
We found about 10 different houses in the area, we wanted to move closer to church, and we recently found out that my job was moving downtown at the end of the year. Now before I go any further with the house hunt, what is the possibility of my job moving downtown and selecting the building one block away from where my wife works? Only God could do such a thing. When you stop and look at how each piece of this puzzle is falling into place all you do is give God the glory. If God would have given us the first condo we wanted we would have a much longer commute each day to work and still be far away from Church. God’s plans are much better than our own, I promise you that.
One by one we made appointments to look at the houses and we found issues with each one of them until we came across this one house. My wife and I both walked in and felt at home, like we already lived there. We walked around, we observed the layout of the house, and we could picture ourselves in the house, entertaining, and even doing Bible studies. How cool would that be, to be able to take what God has given us and use it for His purpose?
After we left this house we went around the block to another house that was much more grand. It had almost 1,000 more sq ft but it was lacking that home feeling. The house was beautiful, but we could tell that it was not for us. Our hearts kept find their way back to the small brick house around the corner. We put in our offer and like any time you buy a house you go back and forth between the buyer and the seller. We finally settled on a price and then our only concern was the age of the roof. Because of the pitch of the house it has what is called a rolled roof so we were concerned with how old the roof was and how many more years it would have in it’s life span. God has been faithful through this whole process for us.
At this point today when I am recording this, God has opened the doors with the inspection, the appraisal, and even the green light for the mortgage. Now we haven’t closed on the house yet, but I couldn’t wait any longer to share how God works. Do you remember me giving you a figure on the condo of $55,000 and being declined? Now this house is more than double that amount yet we have received the green light because God has said it is time.
I really want anyone who listens to this if you get nothing else please listen to this part. Just because God says “NO” does not mean “NO”, sometimes it just means “Not Yet”. If you are waiting for God to answer your prayers continue to pray and believe that God will answer your prayers. We are excited to see what God will do for our lives, please continue to pray with us that the rest of this process continues to move forward with no speed bumps.
I want to thank everyone for listening today. I pray that our personal testimony of how God works has touched your or motivated you in some way. What God has done for us could happen to you as well when you place your faith and trust in Him. Heavenly Father I thank you for the goodness that you pour out for my family. I pray that those who hear are hearing, seeing, and feeling your goodness and mercy. Lord, please use this testimony to touch others that may have doubts, let it be an encouragement to them. In your name I pray, Amen.
